  • Abstract
The goal of the research at Sony was to provide a means for easy manipulation of texture mapped surfaces and to make texture mapping useful in such applications as free form surface design and facial animation. This research has produced a fast texture mapping algorithm applicable to the generation of arbitrary shapes. The algorithm determines a linear approximation of the mapping function over small areas which form the curved surfaces and is known as extended locally linear approximation (ELLA). A digital video effects unit, the DME 9000, has been developed to implement ELLA. The DME 9000 consists of a controller and a processor. The controller is composed of a specially designed control panel. The processor consists of an address generator and a video signal processor
