Abstract
Modern data, communications, signalling and control equipment use semiconductor components which are sensitive to transient and overvoltage interference. The paper discusses a few applications for protecting electronic systems against induced lightning voltage transients and current surges. The choice of component or network needed to provide adequate protection is application specific. This will depend on: the installation operating parameters; level of protection required; the magnitude of incidence transients and surges, which will also depend on the system architecture and environment; and the installation susceptibility to damage
