Abstract
The author reports on the Japanese software industry. The level of technology used in Japanese software production is modest, but what they lack in technology they make up for in careful design and management. The impact of prestige projects such as SIGMA and the 5th generation is more subtle than expected. Despite the modest successes of the 5th generation project a 6th generation project is already underway looking at topics such as neural networks, fuzzy logic, artificial intelligence, wide band networks and image processing
