Abstract :
The cost of adopting a `new´ microprocessor architecture is known to be high, in the case of the PC market it is not an option. This is no different in the embedded market, the motivation for change must be present. The `Time to Market´ effects of educating a project team in a `new´ architecture and the associated tools can be too great to warrant the change. However, if the microprocessor chosen has a clearly defined future, offering easily attainable performance improvements, combined with a tool philosophy targeted to improve software productivity then the decision not to change may be the most expensive
