Abstract
The SPARC architecture is widely recognised as the vehicle which has propelled SUN Microsystems to prominence in the field of UNIX workstations since the mid 1980s. There are currently eight semiconductor manufacturers in the SPARC community competing, or soon to be competing with each other to supply the SPARC processors and associated system chips to SUN and the emerging SPARCstation `compatibles´ market. With such momentum behind the architecture, it was only a matter of time before applications outside the UNIX arena were under discussion. The Fujitsu MB86930 `SPARClite´, is the first designed-for-the-purpose embedded controller using the SPARC architecture
