Abstract
The South African railway company (Spoornet) is experiencing difficulties with some of their train wheel detection systems, due to magnetic fields generated by distorted currents flowing in the tracks. These fields interfere with the proximity sensor´s operation and causes inaccurate counting of train wheels. The magnetic field distribution is determined experimentally to determine if shielding can resolve the problem.
