Abstract
Expectations of expert systems, cost, definitions, application development strategy, manager training, developer training, and teaching expert system development methodology are discussed, and expert systems in use are described. The focus is on expert system applications developed within Intel. A survey of the past several years experience in developing these systems reveals that success or failure has not, in general, been the result of the expert system software limitations, but of human communication systems and of problem selection and development methodology. How these issues were resolved in the Intel environment is discussed
