Abstract
Conventional concurrency control protocols are inapplicable in mobile computing environments due to a number of constraints of wireless communication. In this paper, we design a protocol for processing mobile transactions. The protocol can detect data conflicts between transactions by a two-stage validation mechanism that is shared by the server and the mobile clients. In addition to relieving the server from excessive validation workload, conflicting mobile transactions can be identified at the mobile clients without sending to the server for validation. Such an early data conflict detection feature can save processing and communication resources. Moreover, the protocol allows more transaction execution schedules, such that unnecessary transaction aborts can be avoided. These desirable features help mobile transactions to meet their deadlines by removing any avoidable delays attributed to the asymmetric property of wireless communication
