  • Abstract
Considerable progress could be achieved in the standardisation of digital codecs within the current CCIR Study Period. This is mainly due to the efforts of the two Interim Working Parties 11/7 and CMTT/2 and their close cooperation; IWP 11/7 managed to formulate user requirements and quality objectives, and for the first time of nearly 20 years research in source coding it was possible to develop codecs for an established and well defined target; and IWP CMTT/2 presented codecs implemented in hardware to IWP 11/7 for practical tests. Progress in the 30 to 45 Mbit/s case was also possible by the renunciation of the European interest group Nokia/Siemens/Tele and of KDD/NEC of Japan of their DPCM version in favour of the DCT candidate system
