Abstract
The application of bio-engineering in acute cardiac events has been significant during the last two decades. The next era of home-based medical diagnosis and treatment will require an even greater dependence on supportive bio-engineering systems. The design and development of such instrumentation will require close liaison between the physician and engineer to ensure that the patient´s treatment is not compromised by not being hospitalised. This support should greatly extend the application of emergency medicine while allowing faster recovery under controlled conditions in the home environment. The dependence of such procedures will increasingly need reliable communication and hardware devices, and an infrastructure designed to extend optimal initial patient care
