Abstract
The paper describes the first stage of the development of an expert system for monitoring the production process of anodes used in the smelting of aluminium. The expert system based on Level5 Object continually interrogates the process control system and provides on-line recommendations to operators of any problem which may affect the consistency and quality of anodes. The research has demonstrated the feasibility of using an expert system based software system to oversee a complex production process and to provide meaningful and timely information to the operator to enable the application of corrective action to the process if required
