  • Abstract
Biometrics is the application of mathematical and statistical methods to the study of biology. In recent years the technology has been applied to the machine identification of humans from a personal trait or characteristic. It is probably more accurate to describe the aims of the technology as the verification of an identity because a statistically based system will provide only a probability that the individual is who he or she claims to be. The authors argue that vehicle manufacturers could benefit considerably from the development and application of this technology to their products as it provides their customers with a secure biometric access control key for initially their vehicle, subsequently their home, office etc
