Abstract
In November 1985, committees were established in the UK to consider as initial projects the production of standards for car alarms and car locks. By the very nature of things the consideration of car locks was taken into the motor manufacturers association, and that of alarms by a wider spread of interests ranging from the vehicle producers, the specialist alarm makers, the police crime prevention unit, insurers and not least vehicle users. Here, the author examines the work of these committees and offers an insight into future European standards with the advent of the single market in 1992
