Abstract
The authors have defined a damping factor, ζ, which directly indicates the level of damping on the frequency response of a laser diode. In order to optimize the laser intrinsic bandwidth for an analogue lightwave system, ζ has to be 0.707; and this value of ζ is different from that of an optimal performance digital system which normally requires ζ>1. They have also found an approximate expression for the maximum possible bandwidth, BWmax, and its corresponding biasing current, Imax, in terms of the device parameters
