Abstract :
The need for this study arises because of the interest in personal communication networks (PCN) at 1.8 GHz and the consequent shift of emphasis towards communication with portable and hand-held terminals, rather than vehicle-borne radios. However the use of such equipment inside buildings involves a radio propagation environment that differs from the more familiar street-level situation. In order to determine the building penetration losses associated with 1.8 GHz cellular radio schemes, a series of field trials has been conducted using buildings within the University of Liverpool precinct. In addition to simple measurements of mean signal strength within small areas, the tests were planned to determine signal variability so that conclusions could be drawn about the first-order statistics. The authors describe measurements under conditions where no line of sight path exists between the transmitter and the building containing the receiver, or where a partial line of sight exists
