Abstract
Practically, lossy image compression algorithms reduce image clarity. The problem will deteriorate in a high compression rate. However, since the human visual system (HVS) does not have an equal sensitivity across the frequency bandwidth, the clarity of images can be improved by weighting the quantization according to the human eye´s sensitivity function. An image compression scheme based on the wavelet transform (WT) and the HVS is proposed. The derivation, implementation and testing are presented. The evaluating criteria of the image quality is discussed. By comparison with previous visual weighted image compression methods, our method shows improvement on image quality at the same compression ratio
