Operational weather forecasting has benefited operationally from observations from space for nearly twenty years. International collaboration is strong and increasing. Europe is developing its observation programmes, in close cooperation with the US, and seeks wider collaboration, ultimately on a global basis. The author discusses the role of remote sensing satellites in meteorology
