Systems engineers become the keys to early decisions that have far reaching impact throughout the cost life-cycle. With the greater automation of the design to production process, decisions previously leading to major problems later can be re-visited during the development and into production. Thus the role of the systems engineer extends right through the project, and this role must be supported with appropriate tools The author looks at systems engineering, requirements capture, traditional tools, the essential objectives, current tools available on engineering workstations, information modelling, database techniques, concurrent engineering and problems to address
