Abstract
The TM or TE scattering of an electromagnetic plane wave from a lossy dielectric cylinder with arbitrary cross section is analyzed and computed by using a general computer program of the boundary-element method. The numerical results for the scattering pattern for a circular cylinder completely coincide with the analytical solution. Results for the scattering pattern and backscattering RCS (radar cross section) of a regular triangular cylinder with different sizes and permittivities for different incidence angles are also presented. It is shown that when the size of the cross section is the wavelength, the forward scattering is maximum, the backscattering RCS for normal incidence to the side of the cross section remains constant, and the optimal structure of the dielectric for minimizing the backscattering can be found.<>
