Abstract :
The enhanced visual depth perception provided by stereoscopic television offers improved efficiency for many undersea tasks involving inspection, positioning, manipulation, or remote vehicle control. Several techniques exist for implementation of stereoscopic television. A two-camera system with a polarization coded display has been developed for undersea use. A video multiplexing technique is employed allowing signal transmission on a single coaxial cable and stereo documentation using a standard single-channel video recorder. Tests of the undersea stereoscopic system have demonstrated its effectiveness in providing accurate, realistic depth perception and a sense of spatial awareness not possible with conventional closed circuit undersea television systems.
