Abstract
In 1986 NMUK completed the first phase of construction of its new car manufacturing plant in Sunderland, which had the capability of producing 24000 units per year. Since then there have been two further expansions increasing the manufacturing capacity to 270000 units per year. Such rapid expansion creates many problems. One of the problems was deciding how best to monitor and control the huge individual production shops and how to link them together to make it one effective production facility. One of the solutions to this problem has been local area networks
