Abstract :
This paper describes the application of an ultra wideband (UWB) communication and positioning system for constructing a 3D map of the environment. Basis for the mapping functionality are the device´s ability to measure the impulse response and the system´s ability to determine the position of the device. A systematic analysis of the problem structure is provided and key issues are identified. The proposed solution is partly implemented, and as far as possible verified in a simple experimental setup. Experiments show on the one hand the feasibility of such a system, i.e. that walls and various objects can be detected. On the other hand, the experiments also clarify which issues have to be examined in more detail
