Abstract
The whole thrust of telecommunications policy in the UK has been towards liberalisation and competition. The author discusses the steps that are being taken to introduce competition in satellite services and the role that Oftel plays as regulator. He deals with three aspects: the liberalisation of specialised satellite services, Oftel´s ruling on PanAmSat and the impact of separate satellite systems. Finally, he looks at what the future might hold for users and providers of satellite services
