Abstract
A prototype implementation of a terminal adaptor for broadband network applications is described. This experimental prototype is used to explore protocols, applications, and internetworking functions needed to support variable-bit-rate services across future broadband networks. Each service or network interface has a processor that communicates with other processors in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) through an electrical backplane and through an optical backbone if needed to interconnect two distant processors. The internetworking of services is facilitated because all processors have a common ATM interface. The same hardware may be used initially as a multi-service node for a cell-based dual-bus MAN (metropolitan area network) and later as an ATM terminal adaptor for the broadband integrated services digital network. The transport, management, and control protocols are outlined
