  • Abstract
The principles of operation of the monochrome CRT are described, illustrating its great flexibility and indicating how various aspects of the design may be traded-off to optimise its performance for particular applications. This is followed by a brief description of the different ways in which the CRT can be used to produce a colour display, both limited colour and full colour. The shadow-mask CRT, the beam-index CRT, the Penetration-type CRT, and the liquid-crystal colour shutter are included. Mention is then made of the various methods used to specify two of the most important performance parameters for displays, namely light output and resolution. Some areas of possible improvement in CRT performance are indicated
