Abstract :
Ferroelectricity occurs in chiral tilted smectic liquid crystal phases. Ferroelectric liquid crystal displays are well suited for graphic applications. Colour capability can be added either by dyeing subpixels red, green or blue, or can be generated by using the fast switching capability of the FLC and synchronising a display over a fast sequential-coloured backlight. Greyscale may also be generated by either using sub-pixels or time-division techniques. Ferroelectric liquid crystals offer considerable potential for low cost flat panel displays of a wide range of types, although much work has still to be done to improve ruggedness and obtain wide operating temperature ranges
