Abstract
The introduction of light rapid transit (LRT) systems with rail vehicles on streets is discussed, the British situation being compared with that in Europe where trams were developed, not withdrawn. The articulated vehicles, akin to trains, proposed for use in Manchester are described. Signals are discussed, and it is suggested that a set of signals additional to normal traffic lights is required-horizontal and vertical rows of dots are suggested. The signalling in Manchester is to be centrally controlled by computer. LRT vehicles will be detected, and vehicles on different routes will be distinguished; the signals will then be set according to a scheme of priority
