Abstract :
A micromachined silicon optical rail system for auto-alignment of single-mode guided wave devices is described. The system can be used as a demountable connector for ribbon optical fibre cable, or to pigtail integrated optic devices with ribbon fibre. The fabrication process is described, and results are presented for typical applications with BICC plc, 8-core cable and Ti:LiNbO3 beamsplitting components at λ=1.53 μm
