Abstract :
The author details the objectives which were adopted in the development of the apollo synthesisers-a range of parallel formant, multi-lingual text to speech synthesisers produced primarily for the international disabled market. In addition, several applications of the synthesizers and other software are described detailing their use for visually impaired people. These include: a `Screen-Reader´ which gives blind people access to standard PC based software; use of the synthesiser and software with a portable computer to give a note taker; enlarging characters on the screen for people with low vision
