Abstract
For anyone using the sea as a workplace a knowledge of tidal variation is vital, yet despite its importance modern measurement and recording techniques have had little influence on the way tidal records are obtained. In this paper the authors describe a development programme for a non-contacting ultrasonic tide gauge with no moving or immersed parts. The advantages of the instrument are discussed together with its suitability for use with modern data recording and transmission techniques.
