Abstract :
Microporous PE separators have gained large popularity in the lead acid battery industry, particularly in SLI (starting, lighting and ignition) automotive applications. The “PE” (polyethylene) in a battery separator is actually UHMW-PE (ultra high molecular weight polyethylene). UHMW-PE has a molecular weight more than ten times that of conventional HDPE (high density polyethylene). This paper gives an overview of the UHMW-PE´s contributions to the PE battery separator process, assembly, and performance, in comparison to other conventional separators, such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride), cellulose, and glass fiber
