Abstract
Although much of the basic technology has global application, variations in customer requirements, environment, historic network design, and future network plans mean that the opportunities for exploitation differ between networks. This paper takes as its background the copper network that has evolved in the UK as now owned and operated by British Telecom. A simplified diagram of the existing copper local distribution network is shown
