Abstract :
Distribution system control has provided a mechanism for regulating both the continuity and safety of electricity distribution networks. Computing and communications technology has made a considerable impact with the introduction of telecontrol systems. The authors discuss future technological progress which will see increasing penetration by computer technology with screen-based graphical network representations supported by detailed plant and circuit databases. The further adoption of new technology will pose additional problems as well as presenting opportunities for new working practices. Without timely consideration of these problems and opportunities, distribution authorities could simply automate existing practices and fail to gain the substantial organisational, operational and cost benefits which computer technology can bring
