Abstract
The ISO Reference Model for open systems interconnection (OSI) provides a structured framework into which standards relating to OSI can be integrated. The ultimate aim of the various standards being developed is to establish a communications environment which enables application software running in computers from a number of different manufacturers to communicate in an open way to achieve a common distributed goal. An outline of the seven protocol layers is given. The author looks particularly at the application layer
