Abstract
The author discusses the role of nondestructive testing (NDT) in various industries. He suggests that in some industries, NDT is practised in isolation from other activities. As a consequence the NDT, however painstaking, may make little contribution to the preservation of safety or the achievement of the required design life. In order to improve the effectiveness of NDT procedures, better guidance related to codes and standards and a cooperative effort by various inter-disciplinary teams are needed
