Abstract :
Originally conceived by Edwin A. Link in the late 1960´s, the JOHNSON-SEA-LINK submersibles have become one of the most desirable tools for the marine sciences. Although designed for a working depth of 3000 FSW, the vehicles were initially ABS certified for 1000 FSW and remained there until 1980 when they were upgraded to 2000 FSW. Present mission requirements created the need to re-class to 2640 FSW in 1984. Owned and operated by Harbor Branch Foundation, Inc. of Ft. Pierce, FL, J-S-L I & II are devoted entirely to the marine sciences and archaeology fields. Needless to say, the demands for the new highly sophisticated state of the art tools and equipment required for collecting and documenting marine organisms without locking a diver out has brought many new developments that are incorporated on the submersible.
