  • Abstract
In order to restored supplies to customers following faults on 11 kV distribution networks, the faulted section of cable has to be identified and manual switching performed. The switching is to separate the faulted section from the healthy sections of the feeder and to reconnect supply to the healthy sections. This process results in an average supply interruption time of 11/2 hours per fault, one third of which is the time required to locate the faulted section. The remote faulted section location system outlined by the author is an improvement on previous methods and operates by detecting the passage of earth fault current at the distribution substations and then sending the information to the primary substation using the faulted 11 kV cable as the communication channel
