Abstract
Summary form only given. The PROMETEO project (progetto metropolitano telecomunicazioni ottiche [metropolitan project optical telecommunications) was supported by Telecom Italia and involved also Pirelli, Ericsson, Fondazione Ugo Bordoni and Sirti for the study and field implementation of new technologies for increasing traffic capacity and flexibility. Actual systems employ 2.5-Gbit/s single-wavelength transmission, but the demand for higher bit rates and multiwavelength systems is rapidly growing.
