Abstract
The author outlines the operating context of a road tunnel´s electrical and electronic systems. They can be categorised as follows: traffic management, user information communications, tunnel technical management, environmental management, plant monitoring and control, security functions, management and operational functions and toll collection. The author then goes on to discuss the concept of an integrated system which combines some or all of the functions named into a road traffic information system. Examples are given of road tunnel control systems and the latest advances in the relevant communications technology
