Abstract
Bearer services carried by broadband integrated services digital networks (B-ISDN) can be divided into those that are highly delay sensitive, e.g. voice, and those that, within reason, are not, e.g. data transfer. Since network operators must guarantee the grade of service of both, there have been proposals to give certain delay sensitive services a time priority at the cell level. The author (1) develops a method whereby the queueing of cells of differing priorities in the same buffer can be analysed, with particular regard to delay distribution; and (2) uses these methods to study the effect of prioritising voice cells as the traffic mix is varied over a simplified network model
