Abstract
This paper presents a matrix converter-fed self-controlled synchronous motor drive system. An extensive simulation study has been made for the overall drive system that integrates the matrix converter (MC) with a synchronous motor (SM). An improved modulation and control technique is used for the matrix converter fed synchronous motor drive (MCFSMD). A simple mathematical formulation is implemented for switching the MC switches. This technique has fast dynamic response and is suitable for digital implementation. Finally, this paper includes some practical issues related to MC over voltage protection that is achieved by providing freewheeling path for inductive load current. Simulation results are presented to validate the proposed matrix converter fed drive system. It is observed that the MCFSMD gives good steady state and dynamic performance.
