Abstract :
A control engineer is required to design a system to meet the specified desired performance with guaranteed reliability and safety. Reliability and safety are particularly important not only in the field of process control but also in other industrial applications such as the nuclear industry where supervision has always been paramount. The goal of a supervisory structure is to establish the well functioning of a system and design an alarm system able to predict faults early enough to prevent undesirable consequences. Such an algorithm is named a fault detection isolation accommodation algorithm. This is the theme of this paper which combines control and supervision using generalised predictive control and bond graphs. The results are encouraging in the sense that the algorithms have proved effective in detecting, diagnosing and eventually compensating for various simulated faults normally encountered in hospital operating theatre as well as for electro-fluid systems
