Abstract
The authors describe how increasing transmission requirements necessitated a reconsideration of the traditional relay concept. Numerical relays along with modern wideband fibre optic communication provide better fault coverage particularly for faults on multi-circuit lines. Full redundancy of all components of the protective schemes and the communication channels enhance the dependability, and permanent self monitoring reduces the risk of sympathetic tripping
