Abstract
A generic access scheme, based on ATM techniques, is described that allows one to combine FITL, VHDSL, CATV coaxial lines and radio links in an integrated way. The system is called integrated broadband access, as it provides a common access platform for all services, narrowband and broadband, and as it offers the possibility to combine multiple transmission techniques in a common access architecture. The proposed solution is an extension of the APON presented by Verbiest et al. (see Proceedings 13th International Telecom. Symposium, vol.III, p.49-55, 1992). The main benefits are the bandwidth flexibility, absence of cell loss and inherent policing functionality. The access delays have been evaluated. Possible extensions towards statistical multiplexing gains and concentration have been indicated
