Abstract
A number of telecommunications operating companies have identified a need for compact SDH cross-connect equipment and multiplexers with cross-connect capabilities for deployment in all three tiers of a manageable digital communications network. The way in which the space switching components of the switching fabric are built and the way in which the functionality is distributed amongst IC packages and circuit cards determine the density of the switching fabric and the physical size of the control memory. These characteristics of single stage cross-point and multi-stage Clos networks are investigated
