Abstract :
The BBC had re-started the TV service in 1948 and had no option but to pick up the pieces of the pre-war installation, and work very hard to bring it up to date, and set a course for engineering excellence for the future. This is an important point in the context of an analysis of the “pioneering years”. The policy of the BBC in respect of TV engineering development (and research into future technologies) has been to see this as a very important part of their role as state broadcasters. As a result, they devoted significant resources to this end, and played a major role in keeping British TV engineering in a prominent position in global TV technology
