Abstract
The author describes Pacific Bell´s Usability Laboratory and its position, both organizationally within Pacific Bell and in the activities associated with the software design process. It is suggested that as a `neutral´ centralized organization the laboratory brings objectivity to the multidisciplinary software design team, and it gains credibility and support with proven successes by using an empirical approach
