Abstract :
Definitions of instantaneous current and voltage vectors, instantaneous active and reactive powers, and space switching functions are provided and used to analyze the instantaneous power flow of a converter circuit with switching elements. The mechanism of reactive power generation in the power converter is clarified. It is generated by the shorted switches in the voltage source converter and open switches in the current source converter. Two examples are presented. One is an inverter induction motor drive system with a DC filter. The other is an energy transfer system for superconducting coils using thyristor converters.
