Abstract
Two codecs previously developed and implemented in the framework of the European Project Eureka EU 256, the main goal of which is the transmission of TV and HDTV signals for contribution applications, are considered. The codecs have demonstrated inherent flexibility in terms of operative bit rate and applications. Further optimization is required for operation at lower transmission rates, and particular attention must be given to performance in the presence of severe transmission errors. An update is given on the developments and standardization activities for these codecs, and future developments are outlined
