Abstract
The realization matrix R =[A b; c d] defined by a discrete-time, scalar state variable model of a linear system is examined. Several properties concerning the eigenvalues and singular values of R are derived and used to obtain new tests for the minimality of the state variable model and to derive an inequality between the spectral norm of R and the L ∞ norm of the transfer function frequency response. The singular values and bounds for the norms and condition numbers of principal axis realization matrices are also derived
